How to Spot Another Player’s Tell
The truth of the matter is that there are as many tells in poker as there are people who are playing it. At the end of the day, what you should be on the lookout for the most is anything that might give you a clue about your opponent. If you develop the skill of being perceptive, it can make all the difference in the world. Having said that, some tells are more common than others. Here are a few things to keep your eyes out for.
Are Their Hands Shaking?
Generally speaking, if you notice that another player’s hands are shaking, it’s a sign that he or she might have a pretty good hand, or that they are planning to bluff. After all, if they have an average hand, there’s not much to be excited about. When they’re planning something, however? That is a different story altogether.
Shaking hands are one of the most perceptible things that you can be on the lookout for and it’s a pretty easy tell to spot. If you keep your eyes open, there’s a good chance that you’ll notice someone at your table whose hands are shaking at some point or another during your game.
Are They Blinking?
People blink. It’s a fact of life. But when someone seems to be blinking a little too often? That’s a pretty good sign that they have a particularly strong hand. Even players who are very experienced with the art of playing the game in a poker club aren’t immune. This is why so often when you’re watching a live poker tournament, you’ll see a number of people wearing sunglasses. After all, if your opponent can’t see that you’re blinking, you’ve just eliminated a common tell from your list of weaknesses.
All things considered, however, if one of your opponents isn’t wearing sunglasses, keeping your eyes open for how much they are blinking can make all the difference in your own strategy.
Are They Biting Their Lips?
This is one tell that’s much easier to spot. Unlike the eyes, the mouth can’t exactly be covered up. You’ll notice that some players sit leaning forward with one hand covering their mouth from time to time, but in general, this is one tell to keep your eye out for. If a player is biting or licking his or her lips on a regular basis, it’s an incredibly good indicator that you should be watching their next move like a hawk.
One important thing to note is that this tell is commonly recognized as indicating a weak hand, but the truth of the matter is that it depends on the player in question. As with any tell, it’s best to make note of how a person is behaving and pay attention to the results to give yourself a good baseline to work with.
