As you can probably imagine, we really enjoy a great poker scene from time to time. That’s why in today’s blog, we’ll be taking a look at a few of our favorite poker scenes in film. Of course there are plenty to choose from. Wondering what will make the cut? Keep reading to find out!
The Best Poker Scenes of All Time
Okay, we’ll be the first to admit that the now famous scene from 2006’s Casino Royale isn’t the most realistic thing around. (It’s in good company though, because the rest of the movie isn’t particularly realistic either, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a blast to watch!) Marking Daniel Craig’s first appearance as James Bond, Casino Royale offered a new take on a familiar–and classic–character.
There are a number of thrilling scenes from the opening chase sequence to the sinking of the Venetian house, there’s a lot to love about this film. Our favorite, however, is the poker scene. In it, Bond outplays three other players and walks away with over $150 million. It’s a tense scene to watch, but it’s always fun to watch Bond outsmart a villain.
An adaptation of the 1950s western television series, Maverick is fun from beginning to end. As Wikipedia notes, it “received a favorable critical reception for its light-hearted charm, and was financially successful, earning over $180 million during its cinematic run.” It starred Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, James Garner, and Alfred Molina and follows the story of Bret Maverick as he attempts to win it big at a riverboat poker game.
This movie is full of twists and turns and each of the poker scenes is fun to watch because you’re not sure what Maverick will do next. The whole film culminates in one of the biggest surprises in the history of cinema. Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s a movie that’s full of twists and turns and if you haven’t seen it yet, we’d highly recommend that you find a bit of time to check it out for yourself.
The winner of the award for Best Picture in 1973, The Sting beat out some good competition, cementing itself as one of the best films in a decade that was known for producing some of the greatest films of all time. In total, it was nominated for ten Academy Awards and took home ten wins including Best Director, Best Writing, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, and Best Music. The story of grifters Henry Gondorff and Johnny Hooker (played brilliantly by Paul Newman and Robert Redford, respectively), The Sting is one of those movies that just sticks with you.
Is it full of people cheating at cards? It most certainly is. Do we allow cheating at All-In Poker Club? We most certainly do not. That doesn’t take away from the joy that only a great film can provide you with, however, and if you’re in the mood for a movie that will take you on a ride, this is the place to start. If you’ve never seen it before, our advice is to go in knowing as little as possible, except for the fact that there are a handful of exciting poker scenes. Trust us when we say that you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
